It’s easier than you think to maintain soft, smooth, shiny strands in cold, dry weather
Feel the chill in the air? Perhaps you live in a cooler climate, are planning a vacation somewhere snowy, or maybe you live somewhere where it’s barely starting to cool off. Whatever the case, as we transition to fall, you may start to notice your skin and hair looking and feeling drier than normal.
This shift to cold, dry air, paired with the use of central heating can seriously sap moisture from the places you need it most. If you find yourself with a dull, flaky complexion and dry, frizzy, hard-to-manage hair, you’re not alone. The good news is, there are some easy fixes to help ease these pesky problems.
While you can apply a rich face cream or hydrating masque to combat dry skin, sometimes a slight overhaul of your hair care routine can help protect your hair from seasonal dehydration and damage.
Ahead, five of our favorite products to keep your hair healthy, happy, and to help ease the shift into this cold, dry, beautiful season.
-1 Hydrate While You Wash
If your hair starts to feel like straw the second the weather starts changing, it may be a good idea to swap your regular shampoo and conditioner duo for one that is ultra-hydrating and will help repair damage.
We recommend Heavenly Reparative Shampoo, and Celestial Reparative Conditioner. This pair is packed with strand-strengtheners like soy protein and keratin, deeply-moisturizing ingredients like aloe, coconut and argan oils, as well as white oak and lemongrass extracts to promote a clean, healthy scalp.
It can also help to cut back on the frequency of washes, especially if you live in an extremely cold, arid environment. Try washing your hair no more than 2 – 3 times per week to avoid damage and breakage.
And when you do shampoo, make sure to dry your hair completely before leaving the house, as damp hair is more prone to breakage, damage and frizz.
-2 Don’t Forget Detangler
Does the thought of running a brush through your hair seem utterly terrifying? If so, you should start using a detangling spray to help ease your brush or comb through damp hair.
To help prevent damage to wet strands, try applying Réplenish Conditioning Spray to towel-dried hair. The ultralight formula contains pro-vitamin B5, wheat amino acids, and a slew of hair-healthy botanicals to hydrate, heal, and make it super easy (and enjoyable!) to run a brush through your hair.
Make sure to stay on top of your routine trims to snip off split ends and keep your hair as healthy as possible!
-3 Treat Those Tresses
When you need to up the softness and shine factor, look to oils to help prevent dry-out and damage by sealing in moisture and improving elasticity.
Smoothe Healing Oil Treatment is a double-duty treatment oil that works wonders on dry hair and skin! Try the tingly treat as a hair and scalp treatment that will quickly improve the condition of your hair and it doesn’t need to be heated before use.
You’ll enjoy smoother, sleeker strands with less frizz and breakage. Try adding a capful or two to your bathtub for a deeply nourishing treat for dry skin.
-4 Masque It Up Bimonthly
Another type of treat that dry hair will love is a masque! These deep treatment potions quickly infuse hair with luster, strength and softness. They also help to smooth down the hair cuticle, banishing frizz and flyaways.
Simply apply the masque of your choice to previously washed hair (make sure to remove excess moisture). Let the masque sit for 5 – 10 minutes and rinse with cool water.
If you have fine to medium hair, try Silk Vénom Keratin Treatment Masque. This featherlight, keratin-rich formula is designed to mend over-processed hair without weighing it down.
If your hair is on the medium to thick (or coarse) side, try Borago Borage Oil Deep Conditioning Masque. Packed with keratin and borago seed oil, it replenishes dry, coarse, and hard-to-manage hair.
Whichever masque you choose, your hair will become stronger, shinier, and healthier throughout the year.
-5 Lock In Moisture/Lock Out Frizz & Flyaways
Fall’s cold, dry air is often the culprit of frizz and flyaways. The arid climate strips away precious moisture from strands, leaving them rough and dry.
A way to help protect your hair is to use a lightweight oil styler, such as Remède Shine-Enhancing Argan Oil, to help lock in moisture and softness.
Simply apply a few drops of this vitamin E-enriched oil to either damp or dry strands. On damp hair, it will help you craft a sleek, shiny, weightless blowout. And on dry hair, it will add smoothness and polish to your style.
It’s also a great product to keep in your purse to soften rough, dry ends, as well as tame flyaways, should the need arise.
There are so many reasons to celebrate this exciting time of year. From the changing leaves, to the prospect of snow, and the holidays being right around the corner, there is much to look forward to!
